ChIR/ChIRS Symposium 2026: SSbD — Innovation Beyond REACH
The 2026 ChIR/ChIRS Symposium will take place on 29–30 June 2026 at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, under the theme “SSbD: Innovation Beyond REACH”.
The symposium will bring together students, alumni, researchers, professionals, chemical safety regulators, academic partners and stakeholders working at the interface of chemical innovation, regulation, sustainability and Safe and Sustainable by Design.
Why this theme matters
Safe and Sustainable by Design is becoming an important framework for rethinking how chemicals, materials and processes are developed, assessed and managed. It asks innovators to consider safety, sustainability and regulatory expectations from the earliest stages of design, rather than treating them as separate or late-stage requirements.
The 2026 symposium theme, “SSbD: Innovation Beyond REACH”, reflects the need to look beyond compliance alone and towards more integrated approaches to chemical innovation. It connects directly with the ChIRS mission: preparing graduates to work across chemical science, regulation, sustainability, risk assessment, innovation and international collaboration.
