ECHA PFAS Restriction Process Continues: Consultation Outcomes and Action Points Now Tracked

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a large group of synthetic chemicals used across many sectors. Because many PFAS are highly persistent and can move through the environment, they have become a major focus of European chemicals regulation.

ECHA’s PFAS page now tracks key updates in the restriction process, including the outcome of the consultation on the SEAC draft opinion and the action points from SEAC’s June 2026 meeting. These updates show that the process is still active and evidence-based, with scientific committees assessing risks, socio-economic impacts, alternatives, and possible derogations.

The proposed restriction is significant because it addresses the manufacture, placing on the market, and use of PFAS in the EU/EEA. ECHA has indicated support for EU-wide action, while also considering targeted derogations where evidence shows that alternatives may not yet be available or that transition requires careful management.

For prospective ChIRS students, this case illustrates the type of challenge at the centre of the programme: how to regulate complex chemical groups while balancing human health, environmental protection, industrial uses, innovation, substitution, and proportionality.
