ChIRS is an international MSc in Chemical Innovation and Regulation for Sustainability. It prepares graduates to connect chemistry, sustainability, innovation and regulatory decision-making across the full life cycle of chemicals.

What ChIRS is
ChIRS brings together science, regulation and sustainability in a joint international master’s programme. Students learn to evaluate chemicals responsibly, support innovation and contribute to decisions that protect health and the environment.
Why chemical innovation and regulation matter
New materials and technologies must meet scientific, legal and societal expectations. ChIRS prepares graduates to understand both innovation and the regulatory evidence needed to bring safer, more sustainable solutions into practice.

The curriculum combines chemical sciences, risk assessment, sustainability, regulatory frameworks, innovation and transferable professional skills.

Programme name and funding
ChIRS—Chemical Innovation and Regulation for Sustainability—is the current name of the programme formerly known as ChIR. References to ChIR remain on pages describing earlier programme editions, alumni activities and historical events.
The current ChIR edition is co-funded by the European Union under Erasmus Mundus. The EU co-funding emblem and acknowledgement must therefore remain wherever they apply to that funded edition.
ChIRS is designed to continue the consortium’s academic cooperation and international mobility model. Funding arrangements may differ between programme editions and application calls. Applicants should consult the Costs and Funding page and the information published for their specific intake.
All enrolled students are covered by the consortium’s established Erasmus Mundus health-insurance scheme. The cost of this extended health insurance is included in the participation fees, including for students enrolled in editions that are not supported by Erasmus Mundus scholarships.
