Applications
When will applications open?
Applications for the 2027–2029 intake are expected to open in November 2026. The admissions page will publish the confirmed dates and candidate instructions before the call opens.
Where do I submit my application?
Applications are submitted through the ChIRS Applications Portal. The portal is currently available only to existing 2026–2028 candidates for results, appeals and enrolment information.
Which documents will I need?
The next call will provide the definitive checklist. Applicants should expect to provide degree and transcript records, proof of English proficiency, identification, a motivation statement and referee information.
Eligibility
What academic background is required?
Applicants need a first-cycle higher-education degree equivalent to at least 180 ECTS and a strong chemistry background, including the equivalent of at least 25 ECTS in chemistry.
What level of English is required?
A minimum B2 level is required in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The admissions page lists accepted certificates and thresholds.
Can I apply before completing my degree?
The rules for applicants completing their degree will be stated in the next call. Any conditional application must satisfy the degree requirements before enrolment.
Costs and funding
What are the participation fees?
The 24-month participation fees are €9,000 for EU students and €18,000 for non-EU students. Consult Costs and Funding for the detailed fee schedule and inclusions.
Is health insurance included?
Yes. The costs of the extended Erasmus Mundus health insurance scheme are included in the participation fees for every enrolled ChIRS student.
Are scholarships currently available?
All consortium grants for the 2026–2028 intake have been awarded. Funding arrangements for future intakes will be announced with the relevant application call.
What costs are not included?
Students arrange and finance accommodation, food, visas, personal equipment and travel, including mandatory mobility between consortium countries.
Programme and mobility
How long is the programme?
ChIRS is a two-year, 120 ECTS joint master’s programme taught in English.
Where will I study?
Students complete the first year together at the host university, then move to another partner country for the internship, research project and master’s thesis. The host rotates between editions.
Which countries are in the consortium?
The ChIRS consortium includes partner universities in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain.
Which universities are members of the ChIRS consortium?
The ChIRS consortium comprises five full partner universities: the University of Algarve and the University of Lisbon in Portugal; the University of Barcelona in Spain; the University of Bologna in Italy; and the University of Gdańsk in Poland.
Why do some pages refer to ChIR and others to ChIRS?
ChIRS is the current name of the programme formerly known as ChIR. ChIR remains historically correct for earlier programme editions, funded activities and events organised under that name.
